Leo W. Shada, 90, of Kearney died Monday, January 21, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2013 at St. George Orthodox Church in Kearney. Father Christopher Morris will officiate and burial will be at the Shelton Cemetery. Military rites at the Cemetery will be provided by the Kearney American Legion Post #52, Kearney V.F.W. Post #759 and the Nebraska National Guard Military Honors Team. Visitation is planned Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with a Trisagion prayer service at 7:00 at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney. He was born February 15, 1922 in Kearney to John and Helen (Karam) Shada. He grew up in Kearney and graduated from Kearney High School in 1940. He worked for Whitney Sand and Gravel for a couple of years.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star while serving his country.

On August 20, 1966 he married Lois A. Allen in Kearney.

After being discharged he returned to Kearney and worked at McCue’s Store for many years until retiring.

He was a member of St. George Orthodox Church, Kearney Elks Lodge #984 and Kearney Eagles Lodge #2722. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting. He and his wife enjoyed playing BINGO.

Surviving relatives include his brother Tony and wife Bessie Shada of Kearney, sisters; Victoria Applegarth of Kearney and Maxine Greever of Ft. Worth, TX, step-son; Lloyd and wife Judy Neeman of West Point, NE, many step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2005, brothers; Nick, George, Victor and John Jr., sisters; Norma Shada, Mabel McCauley, Josephine Wetzig and a sister in infancy.
