Ellen Rae Burke was born 5/17/1919 in Liberty, Mo. to Rev. Raleigh R. and Alice (Whipple) Burke. She grew up in Mound City, Mo and graduated high school with honors. After her freshman year at Tarkio College (Mo), she followed her piano teacher to Kearney State Teachers College. While there she met and married Don L. Frederick in April of 1939. She started a family when her son Don R. was born on 9/30/1940 and then finished her degree and student teaching. A daughter, Kathleen, was added 12/7/1945, and most of the time until 1950 she dealt with frequent moves as her husband followed construction jobs. The family returned to the farm after the death of her father-in-law in 1950 and stayed there until moving into Kearney in the fall of 1954. She learned to drive in 1953 so that she could take a job teaching at the Boys Training School. After one year at BTS she spent 3 years teaching at Riverdale High School and then returned to teaching at what was by then the Youth Development Center until her retirement in 1978. While at YDC she was head of the professional teachers association, won various honors including “Teacher of the Year” in 1964 and directed an award winning choir from YDC that toured the state. After retirement, she took on an Avon route, ultimately adding two more routes and achieving President’s Club for 20 straight years.
