William R. "Bill" Moomey

William R. “Bill” Moomey, 89, of Kearney died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Funeral services will be Friday, February 22, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Kearney. Rev. Kevin Holloway will officiate. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. at Jewell Cemetery, west of Sumner, NE. Military rites at the grave will be provided by the Sumner American Legion Post #41 and the Nebraska National Guard Military Honors Team. Visitation is planned Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney or prior to services Friday at the church. He was born September 29, 1923 to Norman and Effie “Burneice” (Robertson) Moomey at their home at Gresham, NE in York County. He grew up in Overton and graduated from Overton High School in 1941 then attended the National Business Institute in Lincoln. He worked at the Airbase in Lincoln then at the Airbase in Ainsworth then worked at the Douglas Aircraft Assembly Plant Oklahoma City and then the Airbase in Garden City, KS.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army. He served from May of 1943 to April of 1946 in the 66th Division of the 262nd Infantry and was stationed in France.

He married Doris Mae Johnson on August 28, 1946 in Lexington, NE.

He then attended Kearney State College and later the St. Louis College of Mortuary Science. He worked in the Funeral Business in Lexington for Pfieffer Funeral Home and then assisted at the Romatzke Funeral Home in Overton.

He farmed at the family farm west of Sumner then moved to Kearney in 1970 and sold Farm Bureau Insurance until 1982 then was an Independent Insurance Agent until retiring in 2003.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kearney and Kearney American Legion Post #52.

Surviving relatives include his wife Doris of Kearney, sons; Randy and wife Sherrie Moomey of Beaverton, OR, Rick and wife Kathy Moomey of Sumner, NE, Tim and wife Sue Moomey of Holdrege, NE, and Dan and wife Jodee Moomey of Omaha, NE, daughter; Barbara and husband Randy Shelden of York, NE, 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and sister; Alvertus Warren of Kearney, NE.

He was preceded in death by 1 daughter; Claudia Moomey in 1950 and brother; Mervil Moomey.
