Jean L. Richter, 90, of Kearney died Thursday, March 7, 2013 at St. John’s Good Samaritan Center in Kearney.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. Fathers Josh Brown, Bob Rooney and Tom Mullowney will officiate. Burial will be at Prairie Center Cemetery at Haven’s Chapel north of Kearney. Visitation is planned Sunday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church and will be followed by a Vigil Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, St. James Catholic Church, Staff Assistance Fund at St. John’s Good Samaritan Center or the Staff Assistance Fund at Prairie View Gardens in Kearney. She was born January 11, 1923 north of Kearney to Harry and Irene (Moss) Wolf. She attended Hopewell Rural School then graduated from Kearney High School in 1940. She then attended Kearney State College.
On October 10, 1942 she married Bernard Richter in Osborne, KS. She and her husband lived in Kearney and she worked for Harold Oldfather at Kearney Loan and Finance. They moved to Tilden, NE a short while and then she and her husband moved back to the area and bought a farm north of Kearney. She worked at First National Bank before becoming Executive Director of the Kearney Housing Authority, retiring in 1990. After retirement she and her husband spent winters in Arizona with friends and relatives from 1990 – 2006.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Kearney for over 60 years. She is a past member of the National Association of Housing Redevelopment Officials and served on the Advisory Committee at the University of Nebraska College of Home Economics.
She also served on the State Committee for Children and Youth, Dean’s advisory Committee at the University of Nebraska, Nebraska Committee for 4-H Development and the Nebraska Council of Home Extension Clubs where she served as State Vice President and State President.
She also served on the County Extension Board, was a 4-H Leader, served on the county 4-H Committee, was rural chairman for the Cancer Crusade and served as County Cancer Society Vice President. She was the health chairman for the county and local extension clubs, was a member of the county Health Education Committee and received the Rockwell Recognition Award in 1969 for outstanding community service.
She was appointed by Governor Kerry in 1985 to serve a four year term on the Nebraska Council on Aging.
She enjoyed flower gardening, reading, baking, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She was an outstanding cook and enjoyed entertaining and hosting family dinners.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Bernard of Kearney; son, Tim (Eileen) Richter of Kearney; daughters, Barb (Jim) Fuller of Lincoln; Teresa (John) Jackson of Clemmons, NC; Jen Emanuel of Laguna Niguel, CA; Julie Vitosh, of Beatrice, NE; grandchildren, Kristen Richter of Kearney, Brent (Hannah) Richter of Highlands Ranch, CO; Stephanie Richter of Redding, CA; Melissa (Joel)Tompkins of Syracuse, NE; Jaime (Luke) Cartwright of Omaha, NE; Michelle Jackson of Omaha, NE; Alex Emanuel of Santa Monica, CA; Elizabeth Emanuel of Winston-Salem, NC; Delanie and Austin Vitosh of Beatrice, NE; great-grandchildren, Colton, Camryn, Charys and Chessa Tompkins; and Josalinn and Dean Richter. She is also survived by sisters, Donna (Glenn) Kegley of Kearney, NE; Norma (Dick) Spady of Hastings, NE; brother, Dale (Clarice) Wolf of Wilmington, DE; sister-in-law, Neva Richter of Kearney, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, June Bolejack, and brother-in-law Robert Richter.
