Doris B. Junkin
July 25, 1917 - January 4, 2011

Doris B. Junkin, 94, of Kearney, formerly Bertrand, died Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at St. John’s Good Samaritan Center in Kearney.  Funeral services will be Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Kearney.  Rev. Gary Main will officiate and burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon.  Visitation is planned for 1 hour prior to services Saturday at the Church.  Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church.  A message of condolence, tribute or memory can be left at www.hlmkfuneral.com.  Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Service in Kearney are in charge of arrangements.

 

Doris was born on July 25, 1917 north of Shelton the seventh of eight children to George E. and Christina (Wolfgang) Brown.  At age 5 she was adopted by J.S. and Mattie (Manfull) Nelson.  Mrs. Nelson passed away when Doris was 7.  Mr. Nelson remarried when Doris was 12 and the family first moved to Glasco, Kansas and then to a farm outside of Miltonvale, Kansas.  Doris married Earl Brown on August 23, 1933.  To this union three children were born; Robert Earl, Genevieve B. and Lauriene L.  The couple farmed for a few years until the depression forced them to move into Oak Hill, Kansas.  The family then moved to Concordia, KS in 1940 and eventually to Kearney in 1945.  They divorced in May of 1953.  Doris married Kenneth Schnacker in December of 1953.  They divorced in August of 1962.  Doris then married Ray York of California in August of 1962.  He passed away in October of 1970.  She moved back to Kearney in 1975 and later married Vaun Junkin on September 3, 1977.  Vaun passed away in February of 2008.  Doris was very accomplished as a cook and seamstress.  She worked in the restaurant business in Kearney and also in California where she was in charge of a school cafeteria.  She made numerous drapes and also constructed and upholstered furniture.  When Doris moved back to Kearney she started her own drapery business.  Doris and Vaun enjoyed their RV and would frequently travel to Texas to spend the winters.  They were very involved in several camping clubs and were officers in a couple.  Doris was a member of First United Methodist Church, Sunday school and Circle 5.

Doris was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, three brothers, four sisters and 1 step-son
